Welcome to the Maths Newsletter
This term has been an exciting and busy one in the Maths department, filled with
achievement, curiosity, and new opportunities for our students. We are incredibly proud of
the effort and enthusiasm shown across all year groups.
Senior Maths Challenge
One of the highlights of the term was the outstanding performance of our A Level
mathematicians in the UKMT Senior Maths Challenge. Every student who took part
approached the challenge with determination, and their hard work paid off. We are thrilled to
share that two students achieved Gold certificates, 16 earned Silver, and 32 were awarded
Bronze. A special congratulations goes to Oliver and Thomas, who not only excelled in the
main challenge but also qualified for the prestigious Kangaroo round, where both secured
Bronze awards. Their achievement reflects exceptional problem-solving skills and
dedication.
UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge
Looking ahead, we are excited for students in Years 9–11 as they prepare to take part in the
UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge at the end of January. We hope this experience will
inspire many of them to continue developing their mathematical thinking.
Problem-solving Competition
This November also saw the launch of our half-termly problem-solving competition, designed
to stretch and challenge students. Each Key Stage received a thoughtfully crafted problem
suitable for their level, and we have been delighted by the creativity and perseverance
shown in the submissions so far. The competition has not only encouraged students to think
more deeply, but also tested their mathematical reasoning, requiring them to justify their
ideas, apply logical strategies, and communicate their solutions clearly. We look forward to
announcing the winners soon and hope even more students will take part when the next
challenge is released in January.
International maths trip
Another exciting addition to our enrichment programme has been the introduction of our first
international maths trip, run in collaboration with the Physics department. This special
opportunity, planned for October 2026, will offer students a chance to explore mathematical
ideas in real-world contexts, develop cross-curricular understanding, and broaden their
horizons beyond the classroom. The trip is open to students who will be in Years 10–13 at
the time of travel, and we anticipate it will be a truly memorable educational experience.
And finally
As we approach the Christmas break, we kindly ask parents and carers to take a moment to
ensure their child is equipped with all the necessary items for lessons in the new term. A full
maths kit, including a geometry set and a scientific calculator, is essential for effective
learning. If you are purchasing a new calculator, we recommend the Casio fx-83FTCW, or
the Casio fx-991CW for those intending to study A Level Maths or Core Maths. Both
calculators, along with geometry sets, can be purchased via Wisepay or directly from the
Accounts department.
We would like to thank all students for their hard work this term, and parents and carers for
their ongoing support. On behalf of the Maths department, we wish you and your family a
restful Christmas break and a very Happy New Year.
We look forward to welcoming students
back in January, refreshed and ready for more mathematical adventures
