Library Summer 2026 Newsletter

Welcome to the Library Summer 2026 Newsletter.

We have had another exceptionally busy term in the library. We supported a lot of students taking their GCSE's, especially MFL speaking exams, and A-Level students, and we wish them all the best for the two results days in the summer. A reminder that we sell pre-loved course textbooks and exam revision guides for £3 each, which is a great deal for students, and all monies raised contribute to new library book stock.

We kicked off the term with our annual bookmark design competition in May.

This year’s theme was a book character. Well done to:

  • 1st Emily L  8AE for her stunning design of Pax by Sara Pennypacker
  • 2nd Mica R  9FD for a brilliant image from Les Misérables by Victor Hugo
  • 3rd Anna W  7TM for a beautiful image from I Am Rebel by Ross Montgomery

The entries were turned into our very popular free library bookmarks.

Throughout the term, a group of Year 7 students signed up to the Sparks Book Awards reading club. The UK Sparks Award is one of the few awards that is totally voted for by students themselves. They read from a selection of 16 books covering two age categories and filled in a booklet with their reviews and votes. Overall, we voted for Shrapnel Boys by Jenny Pearson and I Dare You by Tamsin Winter. Both won their categories, so we have some discerning readers at Queens’! Well done to all those students who took part and read some new books and authors for this award.

Manga continues to be very popular with our students, and we were incredibly grateful to the QPA for buying a great selection of 30 books to help complete some series or start new ones. Thank you to Miss Goetsch and the Manga Club for researching the new titles.

Our June display for Empathy Week was created by the Year 7 Library Champions. I think they did an excellent job of creating an eye-catching set of posters and items. We have a great selection of empathy reads which we put together as well, and students can find all our reading lists on our library catalogue Accessit. Well done to our Library Champions for all your hard work promoting empathy to your fellow students.

Finally, we held our annual school Open Evening on one of the hottest days of the year. It was wonderful to meet prospective students and parents and talk about what they’ve been reading. I created a special World Cup display, and we had several bookish games to play as well. Our brilliant Year 7 volunteers did an amazing job and kept up some great energy levels despite the heat! We look forward to seeing new students in September.
