Year 10 Girls Explore Maths at Oxford University
On Tuesday 13th January, a group of Year 10 girls had an exciting opportunity to visit the Mathematical Institute at Oxford University for the “It All Adds Up” Maths workshop. The event was organised by Oxford University to encourage young women to continue studying Mathematics beyond school and to explore where Maths can lead in the future.
Throughout the day, students discovered how Maths plays an important role in science and everyday life. They attended engaging talks on topics such as “Mathematical Shapes of Biological Data” and learned how these ideas can help scientists understand and treat diseases. They also explored how Maths is used in a wide range of careers, including Forensic Science - proving that Maths really is
everywhere!

One of the highlights of the day was the hands-on workshops led by university students. Working in small groups, our students tackled a variety of Maths puzzles and problems, putting their teamwork and problem-solving skills to the test. They also had the chance to chat with university students and ask questions about life at Oxford and what inspired them to study Maths.
Here’s what some of the students said about their experience:
“I had a great day at Oxford! I really
enjoyed the hands-on maths,
especially solving maths puzzles and
speaking to university students.”
Tiffany A (10FX)
“I really enjoyed today—it was such an
eye-opening experience to see how
Maths is involved in daily life and other
subjects more than you think. I also
learned a lot about how mathematical
shapes help us understand diseases.”
Ruhe-Zahra S (10FD)
The visit was a fun and inspiring day that helped students see Maths in a whole new light, and maybe even sparked a few future mathematicians along the way!
The Box Problem
The Maths Department last term ran The Box Problem, a challenge open to students across all Key Stages. We were delighted with the number of entries received, many of which showed excellent mathematical reasoning and creativity.
Congratulations to the winners from last term:
KS3 – Artan (8AB)
KS4 – Alayna (11SW)
KS5 – Oliver (13AB)
We look forward to more entries for this term’s challenge. Details about the problem and how to submit
can be found on Classcharts.
UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge
Approximately 300 students from Years 9, 10 and 11 took part in the UKMT Intermediate Maths Challenge a few weeks ago. All students approached the challenge with real commitment, and we are extremely proud to share the results: 15 students achieved a Gold certificate, 54 achieved Silver, and 93 achieved Bronze.
A huge well done to everyone who took part, and a special congratulations to Sé, Martim, Yaprit, Mel, Domas, Rudra, Jude and Ryan, who not only excelled in the main challenge but also qualified for the prestigious Kangaroo round. We wish them the very best of luck in the next stage!
