KS3 German
In Years 7 students learn German, French and Spanish in mixed ability groups. Many new language topics are introduced ranging from personal identification to leisure activities. We place a strong emphasis upon grammatical awareness to compliment our communicative teaching approach. Language allocation depends on which house the student is in.
In Year 8 the most linguistically competent minority of students will have the opportunity to study another Modern Foreign Language and will continue with both languages until the end of KS3. Th vast majority of students will continue with their first language until the end of KS3. Students are taught in sets, grouped by ability.
In Year 9 students continue to be taught in the same sets from the previous year. It is expected that some GCSE work will be started in the final term of Year 9.
KS4
In Year 10 students follow the AQA GCSE linear course which concentrates on four main themes: lifestyle, leisure, home and environment and work and education.
We also focus on written and spoken controlled conditions assessments, reinforced by our strong emphasis on grammatical accuracy. With the help of a new state of the art Modern Languages lab, there is a stress on students developing both oral confidence and competence in preparation for their speaking exams. In Year 11, students of Modern Languages continue to study a variety of themes and topics including ‘work and lifestyle’ and the ‘young person in society’. The four skills of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing are given equal significance although there is specific attention given to oral exam preparation in the second term.
KS5
In Year 12 students follow the Edexcel AS course covering the topic areas: youth culture and concerns; lifestyle, health and fitness; travel tourism and the environment; education and employment. Students develop further their knowledge of grammar and their listening and speaking skills are supported by the new language laboratory and weekly sessions with the Foreign Language Assistant.
In Year 13 students follow the Edexcel A2 course which focuses on speaking and writing skills. Again support is provided by weekly sessions with the Foreign Language Assistant and the Language Laboratory. Students find out more about the target language culture and undertake a research based essay on an aspect of this.

In Year 8 students are now put into sets according to ability. We continue to cover a wider range of topics and grammar. MFL staff focus more on both target langauage teaching and the introduction of one further additional tense other than the present.
In Year 9 students are taught as a setted group by ability.
Many of the basic GCSE topics are practised and past and future tenses are introduced in addition to the present tense.
The vast majority of students will be looking to take one language or possibly two in the options for GCSE.

In year 11, students of Modern Languages continue to study a variety of themes and topics including ‘work and lifestyle’ and the ‘young person in society’ the four skill areas of Listening, Speaking, Reading and Writing are given equal significance although there is specific attention given to oral exam preparation in the second term.
Students develop knowledge and critical insights into contemporary society in France.
Unit 1 prepares students for an oral examination that includes a role-play and presentation.
Unit 2 is a module that is examined by listening, reading and writing.
Unit 3 prepares students for a reading and writing examination including a cloze text.
The A2 course continues the emphasis on topic study and themes. Reading and listening materials used in A2 are drawn from a broad range of social and historical areas each of which is firmly rooted in French culture. Students now have the opportunity to excel in writing coursework in the target language on a topic of their choice which is related to a French speaking country.
